Toss on a Dime

SoloNTRP 2.0–3.010 minserve

Why this drill

Most beginner serve problems are toss problems wearing a disguise. Training the toss alone — no swing, no outcome anxiety — fixes the serve faster than hitting another basket of full serves ever will.

Setup

Lay your racquet on the ground: handle by your lead toe, head pointing into the court at about one o'clock (for a right-hander). A few balls. No swinging.

The drill

Toss as if serving and let the ball drop. It should land on the strings of the grounded racquet. Ten tosses; count hits. Then five tosses where you close your eyes after release and listen for the landing. Finish with ten full-stretch catches: toss, reach up with your hitting hand, and catch the ball at full extension — that height is your contact point.

Lift from the shoulder like raising a tray — fingers open at the top, no wrist flick.
